Helpful Parents

Continuing Students

The ongoing support of a parent can be extremely valuable, because nearly every college student occasionally encounters difficulties related to a course. However, cooperation between a parent, staff, and professor is usually not enough to resolve the issue. The solution usually requires the student to do something different. It could be to change how the student was already doing something, or to start doing something new. Either way, the student must be centrally involved in the solution. This is the reason a parent should attempt to get their son or daughter to play a central role in the act of requesting help. Otherwise, it can become a silent message to the student that successful achievement may result from waiting, even though college courses tend to move at a brisk pace. The most potent support from a mother or father is to promote full involvement of the students in any problem solving discussions with a professor or staff.
