Special collections include Newspapers and our Rare Books and Local History collection, which is comprised of printed fiction/non-fiction, internally compiled research indexes, non-government genealogical materials, and miscellaneous local history materials.

- Publications from the four-county area, which include Burnett, Pierce, Polk, and St. Croix Counties
- Mainly on microfilm but also some in print

Rare Books and Local History collections include such things as:
- local and county histories
- printed family histories and genealogies
- church and cemetery records
- maps and atlases
- oral histories
- federal and state census records
- local serials
- telephone books
- older agricultural, Civil War, and Wisconsin and Saint Croix Valley history books
- area cookbooks
- books authored by local area residents
