Distance Research Fees

The River Falls University Archives and Area Research Center offers research and reference services to distant patrons. Starting March 1, 2011, the University Archives and Area Research Center will be charging a fee for most research requests. The fee is for the research, not for the result; you must pay the fee whether or not we find exactly what you want. Please use the appropriate form, found on the Forms page.

• Basic Research: We will check the following types of records in response to research questions. Please complete and print the appropriate form and submit it along with your check or money order.  Each look-up is $5.00 per name per type of record and year for the following records:
• • Birth
  • Census
  • Death
  • Divorce (currently only Pierce and Saint Croix counties)
  • Farm Statistics, Annual Enumeration of
  • Marriage
  • Naturalization
  • Obituary
  • Plat Map
• In-Depth Research: $5 per ½ hour of research ($5 minimum), includes 20 photocopies; $5 per each additional ½ hour. Use this option for copies of non-obituary newspaper articles, copies from manuscript collections, copies from published materials, etc., and for other research not covered in the Basic Research list. Please complete and print the appropriate form and submit it along with your check or money order.
• Photographic Images: Both the University Archives and the Area Research Center have photograph collections and most of the images can be copied. Note, however, that copyright clearance is the responsibility of the researcher. Please complete and print the appropriate form and submit it along with your check or money order.
• • Digital copies: $5 per scan
  • Photographic prints: 4x6 or 5x7: $5, 8x10: $8, 11x14: $11, 13x19: $15
  • Use fees may apply for commercial uses of material belonging to the River Falls University Archives or Area Research Center.

In-Person Fees

The River Falls University Archives and Area Research Center also charges minimal fees for copies made by patrons who visit in-person:

• Photocopies (paper): 15¢ per page; discount for students (10¢ per page)
• Color print-outs (paper): 25¢ per page
• Microfilm/fiche copies
• • Paper or digital copies: 15¢ per page/scan; discount for students (10¢ per page)
• Photographic images replication. Note: Copyright clearance is the responsibility of the researcher.
• • Photocopies: 15¢ per page
  • Digital copies: $5 per scan. Please complete and print the appropriate form and submit it along with your check or money order.
  • Use fees may apply for commercial uses of material belonging to the River Falls University Archives or Area Research Center.

Additional Information

• Assistance is free. Inquiries about what we have or help in filling out the form is free; contact us via e-mail or phone (715-425-3567).
• How long will it take?  Requests are researched in the order they are received. We receive many requests for research, so it may be 4-6 weeks before you hear from us. Please do not submit duplicate requests if you have not heard back from us within 6 weeks. Instead, drop us an e-mail to check on the status of your request. We will be happy to give you an update.
• A summary of the research completed will be sent to you whether or not the search is successful.
• Do I need to send a SASE? A self-addressed, stamped envelope (business size or larger) is appreciated. If copies to be sent are too big to be folded and put into your envelope, a pre-addressed label is appreciated. This saves staff time and helps us get your results to you faster.
• Payment of fees is expected up-front. Your check or money order, made out to the UWRF Foundation, must be received, along with the appropriate form, before research will commence.
• • We are sorry, but at this time we are not equipped to accept credit cards and, therefore, all requests must be submitted via non-electronic format (U.S. mail).
  • Both Basic Research and In-Depth Research requests include up to 20 copies, either paper or digital. Copies may be either paper photocopies or digital copies; you must supply an e-mail address for electronic delivery.
• Rush fees are double the regular fee if you need something immediately.
