Praxis II Exam

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, in accordance with PI 34 Wisconsin Administrative Code, requires all educators who complete, after August 31, 2004, a professional education program for which a Praxis II Subject Assessment is required, to take the Wisconsin specified test in their licensure area(s) in order to be endorsed by their institution of higher education for a state education license. 

(You must register approximately one month prior to the date of the exam.) If you wish to be licensed in your minor, you may need to take additional tests.

It is strongly suggested that you attempt the Praxis II at least one year before you plan to student teach.  For detailed information about registering for the exam(s) please refer to Educational Testing Services (ETS) web site:

Registration tips

  • Paper test registration due dates are typically a minimum of one month before the test is administered.   Late registration is very expensive.
  • Many of the computer based Praxis II exams have specificed dates they are offered!
  • UW - River Falls Institution code is 1918 for all Praxis II exams except the Speech Pathology test.
  • Score reports will be sent to you via e-mail
  • Print a copy of your score report for your records
  • Save a copy of the PDF file somewhere safe

Important Issues for Middle Childhood Through Early Adolescence (MC-EA) Regular Education Candidates

Wisconsin Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence (MC-EA) teaching candidates are required as part of their program to complete a state approved minor. Each college/university identifies the minors it offers for this license and which ones are licensable based on its program approval. Candidates with approved licensable minors in mathematics or computer science, language arts areas, social studies areas and science areas are covered by the Praxis II Middle School Content Knowledge test required of all MC-EA program candidates and therefore are not required to take the Praxis II in those specific categories. They will obtain a license to teach regular MC-EA and in their minor at the MC-EA level. Candidates who minor in the following areas who wish to be certified at the MC-EA level in those minors must take the corresponding Praxis II test: foreign language, English as a Second Language, health, or theatre.

  1. Students who passed the exam, Art: Content Knowledge, test code 0133, with a score of 155 or higher do not need to retake the new art exam.

  2. Students who passed the exam, French Content Knowledge, test code 0173, with a score of 156 or higher do not need to retake the  new ACTFL exam.

  3. Students who passed the exam, German Content Knowledge, test code 0181, with a score of 153 or higher do not need to retake the new ACTFL exam.

  4. Students who passed the exam, Spanish Content Knowledge, test code 0191, with a score of 158 or higher do not need to retake the new ACTFL exam.

  5. Students who passed the exam, English as a Second Language, test code 0360, with a score of 530 or higher do not need to retake the new ESL exam.

  6. Modern Language and TESOL minors are only EC-A licensable with a Modern Language or TESOL major.  Modern Language or TESOL minors are EA-A licensable with all other secondary education majors

  7. Health Education is only EC-A licensable with a Physical Education major.  Health education is EA-A licensable with all other secondary education majors.

Testing Requirements for French, German, Spanish Education

Beginning September 1, 2011 the state of Wisconsin is changing the testing requirement for World Lanague teacher licensing.  Wisconsin will continue to accept passing scores for
Praxis II in French, German, or Spanish that were completed before 9/1/2011 but the exams will not be offered after that date.

The new test will be offered through the American Council for Teachers of Foreign Language (ACTFL) and administered by Language Testing International (LTI).  The specific exam are: 

  • The ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI)
  • The ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT)

These exams do not use traditional "cut scores" but instead measure a candidates language proficiency based on the following scale:
