First Aid Kit
UW-RF FIRST AID KITS

First aid kits are an important part of any emergency preparedness plan.  The purpose of a workplace first aid kit is to provide immediate access to supplies for reasonably anticipated first aid emergencies.  The most common first aid emergencies are cuts, burns, and scrapes to a single individual.  Injuries of other types are best cared for by trained emergency responders with specialized equipment.  First aid kits should also contain a CPR breathing barrier for use by persons trained in CPR.  Additionally, each kit should contain a biohazard waste disposal “red bag”.

Suitable pre-made commercial first aid kits may be purchased from the State of Wisconsin's contracted safety equipment supplier, Fisher Scientific , or kits may be constructed / resupplied with the contents listed below.  NOTE:  Ingestible substances of any kind are not permitted within campus first aid kits.

NOTE: All first aid incidents involving any employee (classified, unclassified, academic staff, LTE, student, or other) must be reported within 24 hours to the Worker's Compensation Coordinator.

The American National Standards Institute's Minimum Requirements for Workplace First Aid Kits (ANSI Z308.1-1998) recommends that basic units should contain:

  •  absorbent compress (32 sq. in. with no side smaller than 4 in.)
  • 16 adhesive bandages (1 × 3 in.)
  • adhesive tape (total of 5 yd.)
  • 10 individual-use antiseptic applications (0.5 g each)
  • 6 individual-use burn treatment applications (0.5 g each)
  • 2 pairs of non-latex medical exam gloves
  • 4 sterile pads (3 × 3 in.)
  • 1 triangular bandage (40 × 40 × 56 in.)
