What would happen if we at UWRF suggested that first-year students could not have a car on campus, or if we offered free parking and electricity to those who drive a fully electric car, or a free mountain bike to those who don’t bring a car to campus? What would happen if parking fees went to $500 per year to help pay for a parking structure that minimizes the amount of land on campus we have to pave and reduces the amount of run-off that impacts the Kinnickinnic River? These are kinds of questions we face daily on our campus, and that many communities in the region also face when deciding on development proposals. Transportation consumes approximately 70% of our daily oil demand of approximately 20+ million barrels in the U.S. The world demand is now calculated at 1000 barrels per second, or about 85.5 billion barrels per year. All one has to do is consider what our personal lives and our culture would be like if we suddenly had to pay $7-8 per gallon for gasoline (which is the estimated price when oil goes to $200 per barrel). The resources below are intended to help us understand the magnitude of the issue, as well as the very exciting opportunities we have for choices in personal, professional, and civic life, both on campus and in our communities.
