Admission to Undergraduate Teacher Education Programs


Admission to Teacher Education is a process for students currently enrolled in teacher education programs at UW River Falls. If you are not a currently enrolled student, and are interested in attending UW-River Falls, please contact the admissions office at (715) 425-3500.

Teacher Education students attending River Falls may apply for admission to teacher education after the completion of 40 credits. The latest point in which you can apply to be admitted to the professional portion of the the program is the semester before you plan to take course(s) which require a prerequisite of Admission to Teacher Education. Transfer students may apply for admission during their first semester if all of the following requirements are met.

Admission to Teacher Education file review dates are:
Fall: October 1st (or the Friday before if the 1st is a Saturday or Sunday)
Spring: February 15th (or the Friday before if the 1st is a Saturday or Sunday)

When to Apply
Students can file an application for Admission to Teacher Education anytime after the completion of 40 credits.  The latest you should apply is the semester before you plan to take a course which  requires a prerequisite of Admission to Teacher Education. Transfer students may apply for admission during their first semester if all the requirements are met.

Please note: You must be admitted to teacher education before enrolling in courses with a prerequisite of Admission to Teacher Education.

This is a single packet application all materials must be submitted together in a one packet

Requirements & Application Materials

  1. A minimum grade point average of 2.75 overall, including grades from all institutions attended, and completion of 40 credits.  You will also need to complete the following coursework as outlined in the table below:


ENGL 100 & 200

Successful English 100 Test out and ENGL 200

SCTA 101 or
 CSTA 101

TED 211 or 212
(technology skills are assessed in this course)

Need to receive  minimum grades of one B- and one C between both courses

Need to receive a minimum grade of a B-

  1. Satisfactory scores on the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) or the Computer Based Pre-Professional  Skills Test (C-PPST).             The minimum passing scores are:    
                            Reading           175
                            Writing             174
                            Math                173
    You can obtain exam registration materials in the Dean's Office (WEB 203). The paper based exam is offered at River Falls during the September, and  November test dates.  Please note: typically, the registration deadline is at least one month in advance of the test date.  You must submit a copy of your scores with your application materials.
  • Completed Questionnaire for Admission to Teacher Education.
  • Completed Release of Records Authorization form.
  • Degree plan sheet with advisor's signature.
  • Recommendation from one faculty member in any department.  You cannot use your TED 211 or 212 instructor. (recommendation will be submitted to the Dean’s office by the recommender)
  • Secondary Education Students Only Department Recommendation from your Major's Department Chair. (recommendation will be submitted to the Dean’s office by the department)
  • Attach copies of your unofficial transcript and Degree Audit Report (DAR) to your application.

Admission to Graduate Initial Teacher Education Programs (Application Forms)

The application process is a single packet process all of the following material should be submitted as a single packet with the exception of recommendations.  The application should be submitted directly to the College of Education and Professional Studies Dean’s office in the Wyman Education Building Room 203.  This is a separate process from admission to graduate school and must be completed to enroll in upper division courses in your program.

Student teaching for both programs requries admission to teacher education.


Deadline for Spring Semester admission is October 1.

Deadline for Fall Semester admission is February 15.

  1. Students seeking INITIAL teaching certification must be admitted to the Graduate School and have an overall GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale within their Bachelor’s degree including all transfer courses.
  2. Students must submit evidence of writing, speaking and listening proficiency (usually a C or above in English Composition and Speech in your undergraduate coursework)
  3. Students must submit an autobiography:
    Format: Typed, double spaced, length 1-5 pages. The autobiography should have a minimum of four paragraphs which includes:
  • an introduction of yourself
  • explanation of your undergraduate major and/or your life experience, illustrating how they will have an impact on your teaching
  • description of your experience working/interacting with children
  • explanation of your role as a teacher in today's society
  1. Students must pass the Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) or Computer-Based Academic Skills Assessments (C-PPST) proficiency test in reading (175), writing (174) and mathematics (173).  Attach a copy of your scores to this application packet.
  2. Students will provide transcripts for all previous undergraduate course work and graduate courses.
  3. Students must complete the Dean’s Questionnaire and Release of Records Authorization.
  4. A course deficiency evaluation must be on file in the Dean’s office (secondary students should see Mr. Michael Martin, elementary students should see Dr. Tim Holleran.)
  5. A degree plan needs to be on file with the Dean’s Office (secondary education students need to have a content area evaluation on file in addition to their degree plan).
  6. Two recommendation forms must be completed and filed in the Dean's office.


Graduate Students must have their file reviewed for admission to the Teacher Education program their first semester they are enrolled in the program. Students who are not admitted to Teacher Education will not be allowed to register until they are admitted. Meeting all requirements does not guarantee admission to the Teacher Education Program.
