Assistant Professor - Equine Reproductive Physiologist

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls, a member of the University of Wisconsin System , is located 30 miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul in scenic west central Wisconsin . Year around arts, cultural and recreational events are easily accessible. UWRF's 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students pursue degrees in four colleges: Arts and Sciences; Education and Professional Studies; Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Science; and Business and Economics. The University provides an excellent environment for learning, emphasizing the importance of faculty-student interaction in classrooms, laboratories, academic advising, and co-curricular activities. The Position:

Description: Tenure-track undergraduate faculty position (100% teaching) at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal and Food Science. The normal teaching load is equivalent to 12 contact hours per semester. This is a nine-month, full-time academic position. Opportunities exist for optional summer employment through teaching, research grants, and other funding sources.

Duties: Teach undergraduate courses in animal science based on departmental needs, educational background, and interests. Primary course responsibilities will include reproductive physiology (multi-species), equine reproductive techniques, and endocrinology. Other teaching opportunities may include systemic physiology, equine management/production, and introductory animal science courses. Depending on individual interest and skill level, there may be opportunities to teach courses in equitation and/or coach Intercollegiate Horse Show Association teams. There may be an opportunity to collaborate with the University's interdisciplinary biotechnology program. Additional responsibilities include serving as academic advisor to undergraduate students and advisor to student organizations such as the UW-River Falls Horseman's Association. Other responsibilities include participating in and conducting departmental sponsored events such as the Academic Quadrathlon and judging contests, establishing and maintaining linkages with the horse industry at the state, regional and national levels and participating in faculty governance and service activities at the departmental, college and university levels. Faculty are also expected to engage in some form of scholarly activity. Such activities are broadly defined and may include the scholarship of teaching, the scholarship of research, or similar activities.

 Job Environment: The department serves approximately 500 majors, including 280 Animal Science – Equine majors, 90 Animal Science – Meat Animal majors, and 130 Dairy Science majors. The department currently has ten full-time faculty/academic staff members with teaching responsibilities in Animal and Dairy Science. The department is one of five within the College of Agriculture , Food and Environmental Sciences which has a total enrollment of 1100 undergraduate students. The University maintains a teaching herd of approximately 50 horses, including an active equine breeding program.

 Compensation: Commensurate with experience and academic qualifications.

 Date of Appointment: August 25, 2008

Qualifications (Required) : A Ph.D. in Animal Science or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment. Strong interest in and ability to teach courses in reproductive physiology (multi-species) and equine reproductive management is required, along with strong, effective oral and written communication skills. Sensitivity to diverse student populations and ability to contribute to the University's commitment to enhancing student awareness and appreciation of diverse ethnic and cultural heritages is required.

The following attributes may be considered an asset:

  • Industry experience in equine management or assisted reproductive technology
  • Equitation skills within western or balanced seat disciplines
  • Interest in contributing to the interdisciplinary biotechnology program on our campus
