2004 Falcon Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Singles: No. 4 singles player Jen Kersten (Fr., Eau Claire
Wis., Memorial HS) had a very competitive week against two of
the toughest teams in the WIAC. Kersten gave the
Falcons their only win of the week against an Eau Claire opponent,
6-2, 6-3. Although Kersten went 1-1, she played competitively in
both matches. Kersten had a very close match against a La Crosse
opponent on Saturday losing, 7-5, 6-4.

Singles: For the third week in a row the singles Player
of the Week goes to No. 2 player, Leah Baron (Jr., Hermantown,
MN, Proctor-Hermantown HS). Baron continues to have a great
season. Baron had a great week and earned a crucial point for the
Falcons this week. Baron played the deciding match for the Falcons
against UW-Oshkosh Saturday morning. Baron beat an Oshkosh opponent
in a three set match, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. "Leah's emotional control
and focus brought her to a victory rising above the pressure of
playing the last match of the night," said Falcon Coach Lee
Lueck. Baron's overall singles record is now 8-2. She also defeated
a Stevens Point opponent, 6-3, 6-1.
Doubles: The No. 1 doubles team of Megan Knobloch (Jr.,
Marshfield, WI
Columbus HS) and Leah Baron (Jr., Hermantown, MN, Proctor-Hermantown
HS) had a great week with two victories against WIAC teams.
The team beat UW-Stevens Point, 8-4. Against UW-Oshkosh the team
earned an important point. They came back from a score of 1-5 to
win 9-8. "The team never gave up and they never lost sight
of the chance to win," said Falcon Coach Lee Lueck.

Singles: No. 2 singles player Leah Baron (Jr., Hermantown,
Minn. Proctor/Hermantown HS) continues to have a winning season.
Baron's record for the past week was 3-1. She played against a very
tough competitor from St. Scholastica and lost in a tiebreaker.
Against Stout Baron played, "very soundly against an individual
who had beaten her earlier this season," said Falcon Coach
Lee Lueck. Baron had a very strong match against Ripon defeating
her opponent, 6-1, 6-3. Baron's overall record is 6-2 for the season.
Doubles: The No. 2 team of Sarah VandenHoek (So., Elk
River, Minn.) and Becky Briese (So., Roseau, Minn.) went
3-1 this week with their only loss against St. Scholastica. The
doubles team beat Bethel, 8-2, Stout 8-4 and Ripon, 8-0. VandenHoek
and Briese played No. 3 doubles for the Falcons last year and have
stepped up this fall to the No.2 spot with a winning record.

Singles: No. 2 player, Leah Baron (Jr,. Hermantown, MN)
has had a very strong fall season. Baron has stepped up from No.
4 singles in 2003 to No. 2 in 2004. She defeated Liz Hilke of St.
Mary's in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Against UW-Whitewater Baron played
a hard three set match before losing, 5-7, 6-0, 7-5. "If you
can call any loss a good loss, this one would be it," said
Falcon Coach Lee Lueck. She has a 3-1 overall record.
Doubles: The Falcons No. 3 team of Amber Weissinger (Sr.,
Eau Claire WI/North HS) and Jen Kersten (Fr., Eau Claire
WI/Memorial HS) went undefeated last week. In WIAC play, the
doubles team beat UW-Whitewater 8-6 on Friday, giving the Falcons
their only point. The team also defeated a St. Mary's team, 8-2.
Weissinger and Kersten's overall record is 4-1.
