Falcons Have Successful 2004 Season

Nov. 2, 2004

By Jenna Campbell
UWRF Sports Information

The Falcon women's tennis team ended its season with an impressive dual meet record of 10-4. The Falcons WIAC record was 3-3.

The four teams that defeated the Falcons were very good programs. "This past season, St. Scholastica was the strongest team that we played all fall," says Falcon Coach Lee Lueck. The other teams that
defeated the Falcons were the three elite teams from the WIAC - UW-Whitewater, UW-La Crosse, and UW-Eau Claire.

The Falcons goal this fall was to maintain their status as the No. 4 team in the WIAC, and to beat one of the three elite teams. Unfortunately, the Falcons were unable to achieve either of these goals. However, the Falcons came very close, ending at No. 5 behind: No.1 UW-Whitewater, No. 2 UW-La Crosse, No .3 UW-Eau Claire, and No. 4 UW-Oshkosh.

The overall standing for the WIAC is a combination of regular season matches and the WIAC tournament. At the WIAC tournament the Falcons also ended up No. 5, with a total score of 32 points.

There were two very impressive accomplishments that came out of the WIAC tournament. No. 2 singles player, Leah Baron, placed third in her flight. Baron defeated an Eau Claire opponent, 6-4, 6-3.

Another impressive accomplishment was No. 4 singles player Jen Kersten placing second in her flight. Kersten's only loss came from the championship match against a UW-Whitewater opponent,
6-3, 6-3. Kersten placed the highest at the WIAC tournament for the Falcons this fall.

Even though the Falcons didn't achieve their specific goals they succeeded in other places. "We all grew as individuals and bonded well as a team. We were happy being able to beat the majority of schools, we still have a common goal, and as a team we will strive and work toward that end goal," states Lueck.

With this success the team will be able to move on to next year and hopefully achieve all their new goals, with a solid base. Five out of six players will be returning for the Falcons next fall. No. 3 singles
player and co-captain, Amber Weissinger, will be graduating.

"My personal highlight of the season was the third straight team victory (5-4) over Oshkosh," says Lueck. "Keeping the entire team healthy and eligible are also important accomplishments. Perhaps the greatest of all personal accomplishments is to see former team members attend meets, become team
assistants, writing about tennis as sports journalists, playing USTA tennis as a lifelong sport, traveling to Madison and spending an entire weekend supporting the team, emailing me wishes and personal updates about their lives, and just staying lifelong friends on and off the tennis courts. "That's a successful season!
