Falcons
Open Season at St. Catherine The Falcons start the regular season on Saturday at St. Catherine of the MIAC. Action starts at 6:30 p.m. The first Falcon home game is on Nov. 10 when they face one of the top teams in the nation - Gustavus Adolphus - at 5:05 p.m. at Hunt Arena. The team is coming off a 14-9-4 (9-4-2 in the NCHA) record last season with seven seniors, led by captains Kelly Jensen and Jenna Scanlon. Also returning are sophomores Cassie Le Blanc, Stephanie Schmitz, and Abby Sunderman. Last season the then freshmen trio combined for 36 of the team's 72 goals. The Falcons plan to optimize their potent offense again this year. Last season the Falcons lead all teams in the NCHA in scoring with 97 points. Among NCHA teams they ranked second with 44 goals and first with 53 assists in 15 league games. "I think well have our best scoring punch ever this season," said Head Coach Joe Cranston, who was named the 2007 NCHA Coach of the Year. He enters the season with 113 wins in nine seasons at River Falls. Cranston will try a line of freshmen in Jamie Briski, Ashly Berner and Jessica Thompson. He said that they will have an immediate scoring impact. Cranston added that freshman Brittany Erickson, Scanlon and Schmitz will be a productive line also. Defensively the Falcons have two seniors; Kacie Anderson and Renae Bergh, along with junior Jessie Dyslin. The Falcons will also use freshmen Lauren Conrad, Bailey Vikstrom, and Kayleigh Bell. "They have some good upper classmen to show them the way," said Cranston. This season the Falcons will start their first season in four years without All-American goalie Amber Linder. Over four seasons at River Falls, Linder had 38 wins and in 2003 helped the Falcons win the NCHA playoffs and make a trip to the NCAA tournament. The Falcons have three goalies this season, senior Mandy Mohwinkel, junior Katie Kantrud, and freshman Cassi Campbell. Campbell will be the starting goalie this season. Scanlon, LeBlanc, Schmitz and Dyslin were all named to 2006 All-NCHA teams. Scanlon was named to the first team while LeBlanc, Schmitz and Dyslin all earned honorable mention. "Superior and Stevens Point will be the toughest teams to beat," said Cranston about teams in the NCHA. "But Lake Forest and Eau Claire are always a challenge." The conference usually is a three-way battle between the Falcons, Superior and Stevens Point. Last season the Falcons finished one point short of first place behind Superior. "Our goal is, and always will be, to out work our opponents," stated Cranston. "If we can do that, and keep our goals against average under two, I think we will have our best season ever," he continued. |
