Site Redesign

Q: "We need to redesign our site. What should we do?"

A: Develop and test your new site in a separate environment from your current site

  • Contact the Web development office for initial set-up of the development environment (see sidebar)
  • The Web development office will create and give you access to a new Web development area.
  • The Web directory naming convention will likely be the same as the current directory but with a number 2 in the name. (Example: Redesigned page for www.uwrf.edu/english/ will reside in www.uwrf.edu/english2/
  • When the new pages are completed in the development Web directory the pages of the current Web directory will be backed up and then removed from the server.
  • The new pages in the development area (www.uwrf.edu/english2/) will be moved into the original, and now emptied, Web directory (www.uwrf.edu/english/).
  • Important note: If your original pages are regularly linked on pages outside the scope of your site, your new pages should contain the same name in the development environment. If not, afore mentined links will be broken when the pages are removed and replaced with pages of a different name. This is only an advisory suggestion.
