Renowned author, scholar to speak about digital platforms and marginalized populations

Nov. 8, 2024 - The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is proud to announce Safiya Noble as the featured speaker of one of this year’s Walker D. and Helen Bryant Wyman Visiting Professorship events.

Safiya Noble photoNoble, a renowned scholar, author, and professor, will deliver presentations on her acclaimed best-selling book Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism.

A public fireside chat with Noble will take place from 4-5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21 in the Kinnickinnic River Theater in the University Center on the UW-River Falls campus. A reception will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

Algorithms of Oppression offers a critical analysis of the power dynamics behind technology and its impact on marginalized communities.

As a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and co-founder of the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry, Noble has become a leading voice in discussions about equity in the digital age.
