Elizabeth Altenburg- Featured Intern

SRF Consulting Group is an engineering consulting firm that provides many engineering, planning and design services for their clients. Projects include designing roadways, trails, and bridges to planning statewide transportation systems and revitalizing neighborhoods and urban spaces. 
 

As a Public Engagement and Marketing Intern, my duties varied day to day, some days I would focus more heavily on public engagement, some days more on marketing, others days on social media.  I also worked somewhat with the graphics team as well. 

My main goal was to gain as much knowledge and experience that I could in a short period of time. I wanted to be able to learn more about social media and how to use it in a professional way.  I also wanted to learn new programs such as InDesign and WordPress to add to my resume.  I believe I accomplished these goals as well as gained valuable relationships with coworkers and management.  I also learned that I should trust my knowledge and be more confident in my abilities.

This experience confirmed my career choice. I enjoy marketing and communications, how it can influence the entire company and how truly important it is. 

One piece of advice I would offer fellow students is to not get discouraged if you don’t secure an internship right away, stay persistent and keep applying. When interning do things that might be out of your comfort zone, don’t be afraid to ask questions but also be confident in in your abilities and make sure to form strong relationships with the people you’re working with/for.
