EyeEm Mobile GmbH is a mobile application/web server marketplace that allows photographers to upload creative and unique imagery, engaging them with companies around the world. Their technology selects quality images to be submitted to the EyeEm market for companies to purchase the licensing rights to use for their marketing campaign(s).
As a finance intern, I was involved with most day to day financial activities. This includes; accounts receivable, accounts payable, and reports for management/investors. A typical day included creating invoices for the sales team and clients, receiving mail, interacting with the sales team on past/current accounts, and collecting overdue payments while assisting the rest of the finance team.
My goal over the course of the summer was to step out of my comfort zone, gain as much knowledge as I could on the exciting startup scene and learn more about the people and cultures outside of the United States. At EyeEm, I was able to get a grasp on how a stable tech company operates and grows as well as diversify my skillsets from the vast amount of tasks and projects given to me. Since Berlin is the Silicon Valley of Europe and an international melting pot, I was able to learn about what advances in technology are happening in Europe, as well as how to navigate and network throughout the tech community. Learning the ropes of the startup scene, more insight on foreign cultural differences and looking at our own culture from the outside has been an incredibly valuable experience overall.
I have wanted to work in the tech industry for some time now, but was not sure what to expect going in. I knew shortly after arriving that working in tech is the right career path for me. Working at EyeEm was not only a fantastic experience workwise but it was a lot of fun (as are most startups). Outside of EyeEm, Berlins tech community is quite dense. I was able to attend networking events daily which allowed me to learn and connect outside of work with a community of brilliant minds that have the same interests as myself. This opportunity in Berlin solidified the journey I would like to embark on post-graduation, and I am looking forward to the experiences and lessens to come.
