Marilyn Miller - Marketing Communications Supervisor, 3M Corporate Communications
Briefly describe how you were involved with a UW-River Falls Marketing Communications student intern?
Richard assisted me with various corporate communication projects during his internship:
How much time did you commit to supervising this intern?
I was not Richard's official assigned supervisor so I probably only spent about 1 hour per week going over assignments with him. Each time I gave him a new assignment he wanted to know my expectations so that he could exceed them! It was clear very early on that Richard was very capable and I could just give him a project and let him go at it.
What did you see the student learn from the internship?
By working in Corporate Communications, especially on the DisneyFest project, he got a very broad overview of the company and a much better understanding of 3M. I think he also learned about how to adjust to the different working styles of a variety of people, and how to work together as part of a team.
What did you learn from having a student intern?
Because Richard was so eager to take on responsibilities and he produced great results, I learned to delegate more (which I sometimes have a hard time doing). I also learned what a difference a positive, "can do" attitude and energetic personality can add to a team. Richard's presence energized us and helped set the tone for our group to get a lot done in a short time!
Would you recommend internships to other employers?
Most definitely. I have already recommended Richard as a student intern for other 3M business units. I hope 3M is able to hire him some day.
