Modern Languages

Discover the world!

Studying a foreign language not only enhances one's life personally and professionally, but it can broaden our appreciation and understanding of the world.  Knowing a foreign language can help prepare students for our everchanging multicultural world.  Combining foreign language skills with other areas such as business, journalism, teaching, nursing, or social work, opens up many career opportunities.

Our international faculty and staff are experts in areas of foreign language pedagogy, literature, linguistics, and world cultures of the past and present.

  • We offer the following academic programs:
    • Major - Spanish and Spanish Education

  • There is an active club for German, Spanish, and Japanese that encourages faculty-student interaction and takes advantage of the diversity of the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

  • Our multimedia language lab offers computer stations and digital resources for language students.
Department Mission

To expand students' horizons by teaching them new languages and introducing them to cultures of the world. Through our program, students develop skills in comprehension, speaking, and writing. Students will also study history and literature to gain an awareness and appreciation of other cultures' contributions to contemporary society. We emphasize cultural sensitivity and respect alongside critical thinking skills. Students are expected to use their studies to examine differences and similarities between their target culture and their own.
