Web authors will avoid adding copyright protected content to UWRF web sites unless permission has been granted by the content owner.

The “Fair Use Exception” permits someone to copy without the copyright owner’s permission for purposes such as criticism, comment, teaching, scholarship or research. In determining whether the use is a fair use the law requires consideration of the following factors: 

  1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
  2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
  3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
  4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. (17 U.S.C.sec.107, See copyright basics.)

When in doubt, do not add the content to the page.

Web authors should not duplicate information on their pages that is already authored on another department's page.
