FOA Policies

FOA offers outdoor recreation equipment rental to the campus and River Falls community. Rental periods and rates vary as well as the ability to accommodate for extended rentals. Renters take full responsibility and assume proper use and care of the equipment released by FOA. Additionally, renters take full financial responsibility of the equipment rented to them in the event of theft, loss, accident, misuse or damage beyond reasonable wear and tear as determined by FOA Staff.

UWRF students are authorized to receive free rentals from Falcon Outdoor Adventures under these conditions:

  • Free rental is for the rate of one week maximum. If interested in equipment for more than one week, student is responsible for the additional fees (daily/weekend/weekly) at the regular UWRF faculty/staff rates.
  • Students are allowed to check out only one of any one type of rental item (at no charge) at a time. For example, a student can check out only one sleeping bag for free, not two. This is a student privilege only and is not to be extended to friends or family.

Anyone is authorized to rent from Falcon Outdoor Adventures under these additional conditions:

  • All processes (i.e. Fusion, Rental Contract) must be completed by a FOA staff member or professional staff member prior to rental.
  • Renters are responsible for the replacement cost of any lost or stolen items checked out and/or the parts and labor cost for any damaged items.
  • All equipment must be inspected by FOA staff or professional staff upon return to assess condition of equipment.
  • If interested in a departmental or student organization group outing, please contact FOA to discuss group reservations and equipment uses.

Free rental for UWRF students and standard rental for faculty/staff and community is a privilege.  However, like any privilege, it can be revoked if abused. Take care of the rented equipment. Treat it with respect and return it the way you received it. Prior to renting equipment, FOA will ensure paperwork is completed. Renters are responsible for damaged, lost or stolen goods, to return the equipment by the established due dates and times and to be respectful of rental center staff assisting with rental and inspection of equipment. Failure to reimburse fees or return equipment will result in suspension of your account and overdue balances being sent to Accounts Receivable for collection.

Gear returned to the FOA front desk after the due date listed will be considered late. For gear that is 1-7 days late, the renter will be charged a $5/day flat-rate fee for late gear, regardless of the number of items returned late. For gear that is 8-14 days late, the renter will be charged a $35 flat-rate late fee, regardless of the number of items returned late. For gear that is 15 or more days late, the gear will be considered lost and the renter will be responsible for both the $35 late fee and the full replacement cost of the gear.

Renters that return dirty gear will be charged a $5 flat-rate cleaning fee, regardless of the number of items that are dirty when returned. The cleanliness of items upon return will be assessed by FOA staff members. It’s the responsibility of FOA staff to ensure gear is clean when rented out and it’s the renter’s responsibility to inform FOA staff of any gear cleanliness issues before taking gear outside of FOA.

Renters that return damaged gear will be charged a fee equivalent to the full replacement cost of the damaged component. It’s the responsibility of the FOA staff to ensure gear is fully operational when rented out and it’s the renter’s responsibility to inform FOA staff of any damaged components on the rented gear before taking gear outside of FOA. Any damaged gear noticed shortly after rental should be returned immediately to avoid charges. Damage that constitutes misuse or negligence in any form is subject to fees. Any damage caused by frequent equipment usage is exempt from fees, except in the case that the damage is exacerbated by attempted repair by the renter.

Renters that report gear as lost/stolen or renters that don’t return rented gear within 14 days of the due date (as listed in our database) are responsible for the full replacement cost of the item. In order for FOA to have funds to replace the item, the full replacement cost is constituted as the full retail value of the item as listed when the item is brand new.

The FOA staff member working at the time of the lost/stolen report is responsible for informing the renter that they will be contacted by the FOA coordinator regarding payment. The FOA coordinator is ultimately responsible for contacting the renter and assigning lost/stolen gear fees. However, the FOA student manager may be enlisted to determine the full replacement cost of the item.

Students who don’t pay assigned fees within two months of being notified of fees by either FOA staff or the FOA coordinator will have a hold placed on their records and a collection process will begin.
