Living Learning Communities
Among our 11 residence halls are Living Learning Communities. These communities are a great way to connect with peers who share common interests or similar majors. These communities are optional but they’re a great way to find shared connections!
2022-23 Living Learning Communities
Designed for first-year students pursuing majors in the College of Business and Economics, this community brings students, faculty and staff together to explore the world of business and provide professional opportunities and development.
Location: Crabtree Hall
Eligibility: First-year students who have selected a major in the College of Business and Economics. Available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Creative Arts Living Learning Community is a residential experience for first-year students interested in the fine and performing arts, including visual art, music, theater, film, creative writing and dance. Designed to connect students with academic, cultural and social resources while providing opportunities to interact with faculty and staff.
Location: McMillan Hall
Eligibility: First-year students interested in the arts. Preference given to first-year students majoring in fine arts programs offered by the College of Arts and Sciences.
The Gender Inclusive Community is a housing option where two students share a room regardless of a student’s sex, gender identity or gender expression. This means students can live in the same room with a person of a different assigned sex at birth.
This community provides students a safe space and the flexibility to accommodate the needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) students, Allies and others for whom cultural or identity considerations are needed.
Interested students must indicate in the housing application in the Residence Hall Portal that they are interested in the Gender Inclusive Community. By selecting "yes" (you are interested), you will be able to request a roommate of any gender.

Eligibility: All students may select the Gender Inclusive Community. Beds are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Designed as a residential experience for first-year and continuing students enrolled in the Honors Program, our Honors Community represents a variety of majors. All residents are dedicated to being engaged, intellectual students and the community helps connect students with academic, cultural and social resources. First-year students in this community will be co-enrolled in two honors courses during fall semester.
Location: Johnson Hall
Eligibility: First-year and returning students. Available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Humanities and Social Sciences Living Learning Community is a residential experience for first-year students who have an interest in the study of anthropology, communication and media studies, criminology, English, geography/GIS, history, international studies, journalism, marketing communications, modern languages, philosophy, political science, pre-law, sociology, sustainable justice, TESOL, and/or women's, gender, and sexuality studies.
This community is designed to help connect students with academic, cultural and social resources, while providing opportunities to interact faculty and staff in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Location: Crabtree Hall
Eligibility: First-year students with an interest in the humanities and social science programs offered by the College of Arts and Sciences. Preference given to first-year students majoring or minoring in the associated programs.
Residents living in the Substance Free Community agree to observe a standard that prohibits the possession or use of alcohol and illegal drugs, as defined by Wisconsin law and university policy, by themselves or their guest(s) in the Substance Free Community.
As a member of the community, you’ll agree that the use of any of these substances by themselves or their guest(s) outside the hall that disrupts the community within the hall is also prohibited. By living in the Substance Free Community, you must acknowledge that you may be reassigned and/or restricted from the community if standards are not met.
Location: First-year Substance Free Community: McMillan Hall; returning students Substance Free Community: Ames Suites.
Eligibility: Open to all students who opt for a Substance Free Community. Beds are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The STEM Living Learning Community is a residential experience for first-year students interested in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs offered by the College of Arts and Sciences. These programs include biology, biomedical and health sciences (including all pre-professional health fields), biotechnology, chemistry, computer and data science, mathematics, physics and pre-engineering, psychological sciences and neuroscience. The STEM Community is designed to connect students with academic, cultural and social resources, while providing opportunities to interact with STEM faculty and staff in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Location: Crabtree Hall
Eligibility: First-year students interested in fields of science, technology, engineering and math are eligible to apply. Preference given to first-year students majoring in STEM disciplines offered by the College of Arts and Sciences.
Designed for first-year students pursuing majors in elementary or secondary education, the Teach Community brings students, faculty and staff together to explore the world of education.
Location: Crabtree Hall
Eligibility: First-year students with selected education majors. Beds are limited and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
How to Join a Community
Want to be part of a Living Learning Community? We encourage you to submit your residence hall contract with community preferences as soon as possible because these spaces are assigned based on the date you sign your housing contract.
