Playing Outside the Lines: Breaking Barriers and Leading in Sport and Life

Pelton delves into how managing emotional and mental well-being through life's highs and lows has been key to overcoming barriers, embracing successes and pushing forward—breaking traditional boundaries in both sport and leadership along the way. Pelton is the program director for Coaching HER at the University of Minnesota Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport, with over 30 years of experience in youth sports and a deep commitment to gender equity in athletics. With a unique perspective shaped by challenging societal norms, she has championed the advancement of girls' sports while advocating for women in leadership roles and promoting equitable policies in athletics.

As an NCAA Division I Head Women’s Volleyball Coach and Senior Woman Administrator at UW-Green Bay, as well as a graduate of the NCAA Women Coaches Academy, Sutherland is on a mission to create environments and opportunities where individuals can thrive.
